Dana Center Role
Barbara is a training and operations coordinator for Literacy First, a program dedicated to providing low-income schools with highly trained tutors to ensure that children advance to grade level in reading before third grade. She supports AmeriCorps program logistics, operations, and compliance. Barbara coordinates the training for Literacy First tutors. She also coordinates service projects for tutors in the Austin community, as well as engagement with local AmeriCorps programs through the AmeriCorps Central Texas collaborative.
Before Joining the Dana Center
Barbara has worked in education in Austin since 2010, as an AmeriCorps member and program staff with Travis County 4-H CAPITAL, and as a program manager with Generation SERVE.
As an AmeriCorps member Barbara taught STEM after school in Austin and Del Valle ISD elementary schools. After multiple service terms, Barbara continued to support the program as AmeriCorps staff for five years, focusing on operations, member support, and curriculum development.
With Generation SERVE, Barbara worked on all aspects of program management for youth leadership development and service learning for young volunteers, focusing on community building and combating saviorism in volunteerism.
