Dana Center Role

Anique is a senior academic program coordinator for Literacy First, which is dedicated to providing low-income schools with highly trained tutors to ensure that children advance to grade level in reading before third grade. She trains, supports and directly supervises AmeriCorps members, who provide early literacy intervention to struggling readers at 30 elementary schools in the Austin and Manor Independent School Districts. In addition, Anique co-leads the Region Xlll teacher certification partnership aligned with the Literacy First program. She also supports the placement and management of tutors during district summer school programs.

Before Joining the Dana Center

Anique has 19 years of experience in the field of education. Prior to her current role at the Dana Center, she taught first grade for three years at Clear Creek ISD and worked for 16 years as an elementary school teacher, reading specialist, and literacy coach in East Austin. She has mentored student and novice teachers and partnered with professors at The University of Texas at Austin to model classroom community building and literacy instruction. Anique has also trained and supported teachers and specialists in literacy intervention and core reading and writing instruction.
