The Dana Center Quantitative Literacy Pathway

What it is . . .

The Dana Center Quantitative Literacy Pathway serves students focused on developing quantitative literacy skills through a transferable, credit-bearing general education mathematics course that will be meaningful for their professional, civic, and personal lives.

It includes rigorous, transferrable, college-level content that meets the requirements of various academic programs and careers.

This quantitative literacy pathway develops student skills in interpreting, understanding, and using quantitative information. The pathway teaches algebraic skills and statistical reasoning through a quantitative literacy lens and emphasizes critical thinking. It also develops skills in reading and writing quantitative information.

Who it's for . . .

This quantitative literacy pathway is designed for students with non-STEM majors who have been placed into developmental math at the Introduction to Algebra or Intermediate Algebra level. These students are typically pursuing degrees in fields that require a general education or liberal arts math course. This pathway is appropriate for fields in which students are expected to understand, evaluate, and use quantitative information.

Course design . . .

This quantitative literacy pathway draws upon education research and the experiences of developmental education experts and quantitative literacy educators. A broad coalition of thought-leaders and practitioners in the field contributed to the development of the following guiding documents.

The quantitative literacy pathway materials are designed to help students become self-regulated learners. The materials also support instructors with information about pedagogical issues and helping students develop literacy skills.

How you can use the current version . . .

The Dana Center completed development of Version 1.0 of the first semester of Quantway™ in November 2011. Sample lessons and Out-of-Class Experience assignments are now available.

These materials are excerpted from the first prototype of the Quantway course. The Dana Center is engaged in a process of revising and improving these materials to create the Dana Center Quantitative Literacy Pathway.

You are free to use these materials in your classroom as you wish (see the Quantway frontmatter below for specifics on the license for use we are granting you). We welcome your feedback on these materials. Write us at mathways@austin.utexas.edu.

We anticipate piloting the Dana Center Quantitative Pathway in 2013.

The New Mathways Project Implementation Guide (pdf 933kb). We are making our initial version of an implementation guide available for institutions interested in the New Mathways Project. This guide helps institutions think through the implementation process. We will continue to develop tools and services to support implementation.
