Transforming Corequisites: DCAT’s Journey and Impact

November 19, 2025|By Genesis Moreno

Texas educators converged in Austin to mark the impactful conclusion of the Deepening Corequisites Across Texas (DCAT) project. This two-year initiative focused on building a network of Texas colleges and universities dedicated to advancing corequisite models.

DCAT made it possible for departments within institutions to collaborate on a shared goal, taking a refreshing approach to an otherwise siloed environment. It also established a statewide network of 2- and 4-year institutions that took a unique opportunity to work together and champion one another.

“I wanted them to feel empowered to drive this work forward,” said Tammi Perez-Rice, professional learning and implementation specialist at the Charles A. Dana Center. “Corequisites show educators what it looks like to come alongside students holistically.”

11 institutions participated in the 2025 DCAT convening to celebrate achievements and prepare for future progress in corequisites, now geared with new insights. Participating institutions included:

  • Grayson College
  • North Central Texas College
  • Northeast Lakeview College
  • Northwest Vista College
  • Texas A&M–Galveston
  • Texas A&M International University
  • Texas A&M University
  • Texas A&M University–Corpus Christi
  • Texas A&M University–San Antonio
  • University of North Texas at Dallas
  • University of North Texas

By thoughtfully designing the end-of-project convening, DCAT project leads, Tammi Perez-Rice and Cassidy Kist, fostered a space where a spirit of collaboration invigorated project participants, continuing to inspire corequisite development beyond the initiative.

Mary Catherine Breen, executive director of the Academic Success Center at Texas A&M University, shared:

Having DCAT come in and share from community colleges and 4-year universities offered us support to get to where we needed to be without any blame or shame or any of that.

The Charles A. Dana Center aims to sustain the momentum for corequisites sparked in Texas with upcoming initiatives on a national scale. Stay tuned to learn more and subscribe to our newsletter
