Chief Academic Officers Network, Urban Mathematics Leadership Network (UMLN), Urban Literacy Leadership Network (ULLN)

The Dana Center, the Aspen Institute, and 15 large urban districts, with support from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, have a three-year initiative to harness the growing momentum and collective power of district networks to implement the newly developed Common Core State Standards (CCSS), which have been designed to increase college and work readiness for all students. This work involves further development and deeper coordination of the Urban Mathematics Leadership Network, the Urban Literacy Leadership Network, and the Chief Academic Officers network, which all operate under the aegis of the Aspen Urban Superintendents Network.

The three key objectives of the work are to:

  1. Build the capacity of a strongly aligned set of urban district leadership networks focused on ensuring that all students are college or work ready upon graduation;
  2. Develop and/or adapt, pilot, and disseminate essential tools for implementation of the CCSS and strategies for their use; and
  3. Develop, deliver, and iteratively improve—through low-cost and free, open access models—online curriculum, assessment, and professional support resources that assist in effective, broad scale implementation of the CCSS for Algebra I and Geometry.

The initiative directly benefits the large urban districts that participate in the work; these districts are critical players in the success of any major national effort.

The districts in the networks include: Atlanta, Baltimore, Boston, Charlotte-Mecklenburg, Denver, District of Columbia, Hillsborough County FL, Houston, Long Beach, Los Angeles, Memphis, Pittsburgh, Prince George’s County, Rochester, and Seattle.
