This quick-reference checklist shares basic strategies for schools and school districts to identify children and youth experiencing homelessness.  It briefly explains the legal requirements for identification and how identifying homeless students can help school districts be more competitive for federal funds.  The checklist is designed for ease of use and includes links to sample resources.

Birth Certificates

Copies of birth certificates for children born in the State of Texas may be obtained from the Texas Department of Health Bureau of Vital Statistics. You may fill out the birth certificate application below, and return it to the TDH for a copy of the birth certificate you need. You may be able to save some time by contacting the TDH birth and death records registrar in your county for this same information.

This document was developed by the National Coalition for the Homeless and has been re-formatted as a school flyer and adapted for use in Texas. It has ideas for school administrators, teachers, students, and community organizations.

Great Beginnings

This streaming video lasts about 20 minutes and describes the enrollment process for children and youth in homeless situations in Texas. It was developed by the Region 13 Education Service Center Homeless Education Program.
