Special Education Services

Children or youth who meet the eligibility requirements must have access to special education programs or services for which they qualify, regardless of whether they are living in a homeless situation. Texas children between 3 and 21 years of age are eligible to receive a variety of free and appropriate educational services and programs provided through the public school system. Younger children who are blind or deaf are eligible for services from birth.

For example, if your child has a physical disability or a learning disability, he or she would be eligible for special educational services. Parents who believe that their child qualifies for special education may request an educational evaluation at the child's school. If eligible, the student may then receive special education instruction and related services, which among other things include speech therapy, physical therapy, special transportation, and counseling (parent and student).

For more information about these services, visit the Texas Education Agency's Special Education page or contact THEO.
