Susan Hudson Hull

Program Director, Mathematics and National Initiatives

Susan Hudson Hull has led Dana Center mathematics initiatives since 1995 and currently serves as the center’s director of mathematics and national initiatives. She provides technical assistance to mathematics teachers nationally and works with Dana Center mathematics education and leadership networks, including the statewide mathematics higher education network. Dr. Hull has also led development of many publications and resources as well as statewide professional development for educators.

Currently, Dr. Hull directs the Dana Center’s Academic Youth Development initiative, a bridge program for students moving from 8th grade mathematics to 9th grade algebra, and the center’s Urban Mathematics Leadership Network, a consortium of large school districts across the United States. She is coprincipal investigator for the National Science Foundation-funded Advanced Mathematics for All project and is codirecting revision of the Washington State mathematics standards. Recently, Dr. Hull also directed Ensuring Teacher Quality: Algebra I and Algebra II (2005), an initiative funded by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board and the Texas Education Agency, and codirected the U.S. Department of Education–funded project Supporting and Strengthening Standards-Based Mathematics Teacher Preparation.

From 1995 to 2003, Dr. Hull served as the mathematics director for the Dana Center’s Texas Statewide Systemic Initiative and the state Mathematics Center for Educator Development. In these roles, Dr. Hull worked with the Dana Center mathematics team and other educators around the state to coordinate development of the mathematics portion of the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) as well as resources for mathematics TEKS implementation, including the Mathematics TEKS Toolkit. She also coordinated development of statewide TEXTEAMS standards-aligned mathematics professional development institutes and served as director for a statewide project to implement in Texas the Connected Mathematics Project materials for middle school mathematics. Dr. Hull managed the Dana Center’s National Science Foundation–funded mathematics preservice project and coauthored the 1996 Guidelines for the Mathematical Preparation of Prospective Elementary Teachers.

Dr. Hull has served on several national and statewide committees for mathematics education, including as a consultant for the National Assessment of Educational Progress’s mathematics item review, as program chair for the Conference for the Advancement of Mathematics Teaching (2002), as chair of the Emerging Issues Committee for the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, and as a member of several advisory boards.

Before joining the Dana Center leadership, Dr. Hull taught high school mathematics in Texas for 16 years. She was designated as a finalist for Texas Teacher of the Year 1991–92 and has been recognized with several statewide teaching awards. Dr. Hull has a Ph.D. in mathematics education from The University of Texas at Austin and an M.S. in mathematics teaching from Stephen F. Austin State University.
