Mary Ellen Isaacs

ACE Director

Mary Ellen Isaacs is the Director for A Community for Education (ACE), a literacy intervention program operating in six Austin elementary schools.

Mary Ellen has 11 years experience developing and administering a national service tutoring project and 30 years experience working in the field of reading difficulties as a teacher, diagnostician, and program coordinator. She is responsible for all aspects of the ACE program, including tutor recruitment, training, and supervision; relationships with community partners; national service program requirements; and fund development. Prior to receiving her Ph.D., Mary Ellen worked as a special education consultant at Mt. Sinai Hospital Center for Learning Disabilities and Duke University Developmental Evaluation Center. Her dissertation research focused on phonemic awareness development and its relationship to reading and spelling in first grade.

Mary Ellen holds an M.A. in Learning Disabilities and Communication Disorders from Northwestern University and a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction (Language and Literacy Studies) from The University of Texas at Austin.
