Dauna Howerton serves as a senior program coordinator on the Dana Center professional development team. She creates and delivers professional development for campus and district leaders.

Dr. Howerton has worked in education for 20 years and has an eclectic range of experiences in the field. She has taught students of all ages, from prekindergarten to college, and has worked to support teachers across all content areas. She has also taught literacy to adult students.

Dr. Howerton led state initiatives in reading and English language arts for the New Mexico Public Education Department; in Texas, she was a school site coordinator for one of the first 3-Tier projects, a response-to-intervention program aimed at improving elementary students’ reading skills.

She comes to the Dana Center after working as a high school literacy coach in the Round Rock Independent School District, where one of the high schools earned a Recognized rating by TEA in 2009. In the past few years, she has specialized in coaching teachers to not only understand TAKS and other assessment data, but also to use the data to inform development and implementation of sound instruction.

Dr. Howerton received a B.A. in liberal arts from Metropolitan State University in St. Paul, Minnesota and an M.A.T. in English from the University of Wisconsin–River Falls. She holds a Ph.D. in special education from The University of Texas at Austin and was a fellow of the Office of Special Education Programs.
