Dr. Cynthia Schneider works with the mathematics and research teams at the Charles A. Dana Center.
She has participated in several qualitative studies, including the Dana Center's Opening Doors: Promising Lessons from Five Texas High Schools, the Longitudinal Evaluation of School Change and Performance (investigating elementary Title 1 campuses), the Local Systemic Change grant with Austin ISD, and the Department of Education's national study, conducted by the Dana Center, on high-performing high-poverty middle schools. Her quantitative research includes her dissertation, entitled Connected Mathematics and TAAS and completed in 2000, and a 2003 report on the Examination of Resource Allocation in Education: Connecting Spending to Student Performance. Her current work includes data analysis on the use of a web-based mathematics resource for teachers and students in grades 7-12.
Dr. Schneider is the government relations representative and membership chair of the Texas Council of Teachers of Mathematics (TCTM) and president-elect of the Austin Area Council of Teachers of Mathematics. She is the editor of Texas Mathematics Teacher, a biannual publication of TCTM. For seven states in the western portion of the southern United States, she is the regional representative to the Affiliate Services Committee of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM).
Before coming to the Dana Center, Dr. Schneider taught mathematics at Southwest Texas State University, Austin Community College, and Southwestern University in Georgetown. While living in Europe, she had an opportunity to observe public school mathematics teaching in Germany and Poland.
