Bill Hopkins

Research Associate

Bill Hopkins serves as a research associate for the Dana Center's district services and mathematics teams. These teams provide support and services to school districts, including professional development for leaders and teachers. Dr. Hopkins is currently working on state-level initiatives outside Texas and leader and teacher professional development in Texas.

Dr. Hopkins came to the Dana Center from the Texas Education Agency, where he served as Director of Mathematics in the division of Curriculum and Professional Development. In that capacity he provided leadership in the development of the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills for Mathematics and worked extensively with TAAS mathematics item review and development committees. At TEA Dr. Hopkins coauthored eleven publications regarding mathematics education.

Dr. Hopkins taught mathematics for a number of years in Texas public schools at the middle school and high school levels. He also was an adjunct faculty member of Austin Community College for 18 years, where he was a part-time-faculty award winner for excellence in teaching.

Dr. Hopkins served eight years as Conference Chair for the annual Texas Conference for the Advancement of Mathematics Teaching (CAMT). At CAMT 1999, he received an award for outstanding leadership from the CAMT Board, and at CAMT 2000, he received the E. Glenadine Gibb Achievement Award from the Texas Council of Teachers of Mathematics. Dr. Hopkins has worked on numerous curriculum and assessment projects in mathematics at the state and national levels, including service on the College Board Mathematics Advisory Committee, the Third International Mathematics and Science Study Mathematics Scale Anchoring Committee, and the National Association of Educational Progress Mathematics Development Committee. He has also served as Selection Committee Moderator for the NSF Teacher Enhancement Awards Program, and he served as First Vice President of the Association of State Supervisors of Mathematics (ASSM) for two years. Dr. Hopkins chaired a committee of ASSM and NCSM members that produced the booklet, Guide to Selecting Instructional Materials for Mathematics Education, and he represented ASSM as a Contributing Author of EDThoughts, What We Know About Mathematics Teaching and Learning, published by McREL. Dr. Hopkins received a Distinguished Service Award through ASSM, acknowledging his leadership in mathematics education.

Dr. Hopkins holds an M.S. in Mathematics from the University of North Texas and a Ph.D. in Mathematics Education from The University of Texas at Austin.
