Earth Science: From Planning to Assessment
Grade-level focus: Grades 6–8
Audience: Middle school teachers, instructional specialists and coaches
Session duration: Two-day session
Educators will experience science-specific professional learning that addresses key middle school earth science standards. Using engaging, student-friendly, hands-on lessons, participants’ experiences will include a study of how to ensure that scientific practices are integrated into science content in ways that enhance and deepen student learning. This session will cover earth science topics, including:
- The Solar System
- Earth Seasonal Changes
- Plate Tectonics
- The Universe
- Interpreting Earth Surface Features
Teachers will analyze the earth and space science TEKS to determine how they should be used to guide planning, instruction, and assessment. This analysis includes opportunities for active learning of new teaching strategies, the use of resources that are designed to support student learning of key earth science content, and collaboration with peers. Throughout the two-day session, participants will consider the impact that integrating earth science content, scientific practices, and recurring themes can have on student learning.
Each participant will receive a copy of the Formative Assessment for Middle School Earth and Space Science book on DVD.
