Jim Collins serves as a senior program coordinator for the science team. He has authored the first three editions of the Texas Safety Standards: Kindergarten Through Grade 12, as well as Science Safety Standards: Kindergarten Through Grade 12, Science Facilities Standards: Kindergarten Through Grade 12, An Analysis of Laboratory Safety in Texas, and several other science education publications, charts, and guides. He also provides professional development to teachers and administrators on safety as it relates to the science classroom.
Before joining the Dana Center, Mr. Collins served as Director of Science at the Texas Education Agency for eight years. Prior to his work at TEA, he was science supervisor for the Pasadena Independent School District for six years and a science teacher for 18 years. In addition, Mr. Collins was an adjunct professor at San Jacinto College, where he taught anatomy and physiology in the nursing program, and at the University of Houston–Clear Lake, where he taught in the science education department.
Mr. Collins serves on a variety of state and national committees in science, including the National Science Teachers Association?s Safety Advisory Committee.
He received his B.S. in Composite Science from Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, Texas. He also holds an M.S. in Biology from Texas A&M University–Commerce, and Supervision and Mid-management Certifications from the University of Houston–Clear Lake.
