This session is designed primarily for instructional specialists, coaches, and teachers of middle school mathematics.

You will examine and use a set of research-based strategies and tools for increasing student problem-solving skills, which play a key role in improving student performance and increasing student success.

Problem solving provides an important context in which students can learn about various mathematical topics and through which teachers can assess student performance in all aspects of mathematics.

In this session, you will:

  • Explore problem solving as it appears in and connects to the TEKS.
  • Learn and use a set of research-based strategies and tools designed to support students’ ability to formulate and solve problems.
  • Collaborate with professional mathematics colleagues around
    • Instructional strategies for improving student problem-solving skills in middle school mathematics and
    • Learning and implementing additional instructional strategies in middle school problem solving.
