Middle School Algebraic Reasoning

A two-day session

Audience:

  • Teachers
  • Instructional specialists and coaches

The middle school mathematics standards call for students to develop “algebraic habits of mind.” In this session, you will explore and practice these habits of mind.

In collaboration with other participants, you will build connections among concrete, numeric, graphic, and symbolic representations of relationships between quantities in ways that inform classroom strategies. You will also explore patterns and problems that lead to the development of algebraic thinking skills.

Participants will share their approaches to and methods for solving problems, and will examine instructional strategies that are effective at overcoming hurdles and deepening student understanding of algebraic concepts.
