The Dana Center has developed a technical assistance support program that can help your schools meet their Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) criteria and/or respond to Response to Intervention (RTI) requirements. This technical assistance program—which is based on our more than 15 years of research and experience in strengthening teaching and learning for all students—helps school systems implement three research-based strategies to improve mathematics and science achievement:

  • Ensuring students have access to the same Guaranteed and Viable Curriculum,
  • Supporting teacher and leader collaboration around the Guaranteed and Viable Curriculum, and
  • Providing monitoring and support to help teachers teach and students learn the Guaranteed and Viable Curriculum.

Year 1 of the Leadership Workshop Series includes four sessions. The first session is May 14-15, 2008. The next three sessions are the following June/July, September/October, and January/February. The exact dates of those sessions will be set by the attendees at the first session.

LEADERSHIP SESSION 1: May 14-15, 2008

The first leadership workshop will focus on:

  • Data analysis to ensure the school system understands the strengths and weaknesses of their curriculum.
  • An Instructional Analysis Tool to help examine the TAKS objective data to help make changes to improve student achievement in mathematics and/or science.
  • Analysis of school system structures to determine what is—and what is not—in place to support teachers and students in achieving high levels of performance.
  • The Dana Center’s CARA process tool, which helps leaders Collect, Analyze, Reflect, and Act on data. This process tool can help leaders use various data inputs to improve instruction.
  • A discussion of the leadership skills necessary for the 21st century.

LEADERSHIP SESSION 2: June/July 2008

The second leadership workshop will focus on:

  • A review of the data analysis work leaders have done based on the first leadership session and reports on any structural changes leaders have made in their schools or districts. This review will provide an opportunity for leaders to learn from each other.
  • Learning how to conduct classroom walk-through observations by collecting objective data about the alignment and rigor of the learning occurring at each leader’s school or district.
  • Continuing to review the structures of each participant’s school system.
  • Continuing discussion of developing leadership skills for the 21st century.

LEADERSHIP SESSION 3: September/October 2008

The third leadership workshop will focus on:

  • A review of the trends from the classroom walk-through data that leaders have collected, to establish benchmark data about their school or district so that they can measure progress in the future.
  • A follow-up training on the classroom walk-through process that looks at how to analyze data and then reflect on the data with teachers, to make improvements in instruction and learning.
  • An analysis of each school system’s 2005–2008 TAKS data and implications for the 2008–2009 school year.
  • The development of plans for the next school year, based on participating leaders’ classroom walk-through data and their 2008 TAKS analysis. These plans will cover the areas of:
    • Staff development for mathematics and science teachers,
    • Structures that support students and teachers,
    • Curriculum improvement,
    • Assessment strategies, and
    • Continued leadership development.

Leaders from each participating school or district will then—based on the classroom walk-through data—begin to prepare a staff development plan for the current and next school year. Leaders will also develop instructional expectations for every classroom, every day to share with teachers. The session will end with the leaders participating in a “leading change” simulation to better understand the stages of change and how to move organizations and people through a change process.

LEADERSHIP SESSION 4: January/February 2009

The fourth leadership workshop will focus on:

  • A review and discussion of actions taken as a result of the review and reflection on classroom walk-through data in sessions 2 and 3.
  • Updates on action plans.
  • Weeding the Garden, a structured way to look at the various school programs (where time and money are spent) and how to determine their effectiveness and their contribution to the goals of the system.
  • Continuing discussion of developing leadership skills for the 21st century.
