Welcome Texas Teachers Using Mathematical Models with Applications!
This Readme First file explains what is contained on the Mathematical Models with Applications (MMA) CD and how to get started.
If you've read this material before and wish to go to the MMA Home Screen, click here.
What is contained on this CD?
- Curric Folder
- Tools Folder
- Resource Folder
The Curric Folder for 'Mathematical Models with Applications' includes:
- Unit Materials: There are eight units plus the INTRODUCTORY module in the "What is Mathematical Modeling?" curriculum. Each of the units includes:
- A Teacher's Guide, with extensive notes on the activities, individual and group work, and suggestions for assessment instruments.
- An Annotated Student Notes, with suggested answers, as well as supplemental activities for additional experience with the mathematics used in modeling,
- Student Texts
- Transparencies for the units
The CD itself, including the Teacher's Guide, and Annotated Student Notes is intended for teacher use only. The Student Texts are provided in the Portable Document Format (PDF) so that they can be printed locally when needed. The Teacher's Guide and Annotated Student Notes are provided in two formats: Portable Document Format (PDF) version and Digital/Web version. These versions, both PDF and web-based, can be accessed by clicking on the "Go to the MMA Home Screen" at the bottom of this page. When you reach the Home Screen, click on "Index of Unit Materials" at the bottom right of the page to access the web and PDF versions of the MMA curriculum.
The PDF versions are intended to be printed out, not viewed in the browser. The PDF format assures that all pages will appear exactly the same whenever they are printed. Web versions of the documents will exhibit unpredictable pagination should you attempt to make hard copy. To view a PDF file, you will need a copy of ADOBE ACROBAT READER © installed on your computer. Instructions for installation of the ADOBE ACROBAT READER © Version 3.02 are contained in the document ADOBE.txt in the Tools Folder. The ADOBE ACROBAT READER © Version 3.02 installer for both PC and MAC platforms is included on the CD in the Tools folder. If you already have ACROBAT READER on your computer, you do not have to re-install it. If the version on this CD is more recent, you may wish to overwrite the older one. To print out any of the PDF units, or particular pages, access the PRINT CONTROLS in the ACROBAT READER and select pages you wish to send to your printer. The PDF versions are monochrome. They are not enhanced on a colored printer.
The web versions of the Teacher's Guide and Annotated Student Notes, are based on the printed version of these same materials but they build on the capacity of a CD to include multi-media elements. To view the web version of these materials, we recommend using Netscape 4.0 or higher version, or Internet Explorer 4.0 or higher version. The web materials contain rich-media annotations, including animations, video, and audio clips. To enjoy these elements, you will need to install Quicktime 3 © by Apple Computer, on your hard drive. Instructions for installation of Quicktime 3 © are in the QTIME.txt document in the Tools Folder. The installer for Quicktime 3 © for both PC and MAC platforms is included on the CD in the Tools folder.
Also contained in the screens in the Curric folder are:
- Links: A link to the Texas Education Authority site for teachers of Mathematical Models with Applications is provided. If your computer has net access the link will direct you the MMA discussion area. You must be an authorized user to view and contribute to the discussion area. Instructions on how to register are included at the link.
A link to a public site dedicated to new math curricula in Texas is also supplied.
- Help: The Help page gives useful hints to guide users trouble shooting hardware and software problems, or those seeking assistance for navigational issues.
- Home: The Home screen contains navigational features to permit access to any part of the MMA curriculum.
The Tools Folder includes:
- ADOBE ACROBAT READER ©
- Quicktime 3 ©
The Resource Folder includes:
- Files for use with calculator programs in various units. Files for products by Texas Instruments and Casio are included. Also included are runtime versions of the BASIC programs used in the Wildlife unit.
- A demo copy of Professor Goldstein's TI-83 Trainer. The TI-83 Trainer emulates the TI-83 for display on a LCD or large monitor. It also can be used for storing and crafting code. The trainer is available for the PC platform only. Mac systems can run it using a Windows emulator like SoftWindows 98©. The rights to use the demo will expire one year after the initial installation of the product.
How To Get Started:
The computer hardware requirements for effective use of the CD are:
- Mac
System 7+, 24 MB RAM, 60 MHz or higher processor, CD 2x or higher
- PC
Win 95, or Windows NT, 32 MB RAM, pentium processor (100 + MHz),
CD 2x or higher
The files containing the units are large and the processor devote considerable resources to display graphics and rich media. Unacceptible performance, such as slow loading, very slow scrolling, or breaks in playback of audio clips, can be expected with slow computers or those with insufficient RAM.
Steps to view the MMA curriculum.
- Confirm that the computer on which you are attempting to view the curriculum conforms to the above requirements for system, processor speed, and memory.
- Confirm you have Netscape 4.0 or higher, or Internet Explorer 4.0 or higher.
- Install the ADOBE ACROBAT READER © Instructions are in the ADOBE.txt document.
- Install the Quicktime 3 © software. Instructions are in the QTIME.txt
When you are completed steps 1-4, you can access the curriculum by clicking on this link
