Blackshear Reading Club.
On September 25th, ACEE members and Blackshear Elementary School students kicked off the third year of the Blackshear After-School Reading Club by "shaking their sillies out."
ACEE member Lewis Thomas strummed the guitar as the children and ACEE tutors sang along to "Down By the Bay" and "This Old Man." Thomas is one of twenty members participating in the reading club funded by the Tutorials Assistance Grant (TAG).
The reading club provides individual tutoring sessions in reading for students in grades kindergarten to third who have been identified as needing extra assistance with developing literacy skills. The reading club assists twenty-five students in strengthening their Language Arts skills, including eight bilingual students. Activities for the reading club this year include read-alouds, songs, poems, acting, and visits to the George Washington Carver Austin Public Library Branch. The club meets after school every Tuesday and Thursday from 3:00 to 4:30 p.m.
