By day, Sanchez Elementary may seem like an ordinary school, but every Tuesday and Thursday night, Sanchez is converted into a place where many adults come to study and learn English, some for the very first time. From 6 to 8 p.m. every Tuesday and Thursday, Sanchez offers English as a Second Language (ESL) classes to anyone who is interested. There are three levels of English classes: Beginning (Level 1), Intermediate (Level 2), and Advanced (Level 3). The classes are free, and free child care is provided. Sanchez welcomes all parents and members of the community to partake of this wonderful opportunity.
The ESL 1999–2000 program began in September 1999 with more than 100 student applicants, and now averages approximately 70 students each night.
The ESL teachers come from a variety of backgrounds: graduate students, AmeriCorps members, and those in the professional field. All teachers are trained through Literacy Austin and are required to observe ESL classes before they begin teaching classes. This year, there are 9 teachers, with at least two teachers in each level. Each teacher develops his or her own lesson plans and is responsible for about 10 students. Lessons being covered this year are computer skills, American holidays, TASP preparation, and reading comprehension of Robert Louis Stevenson's Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. There is a great appreciation from each student. Each student's eagerness to learn encourages the teachers and their peers.
As the ESL program continues to grow, it is often difficult to provide all the necessary materials. This semester the Mexican Consalate has graciously donated some books for the ESL students; if you have any dictionaries or books you would like to donate, please contact Jennifer San Pedro at 414-3053.
A million thanks go out to all ESL teachers and child care workers for all your hard work, time, and efforts to make this program such a huge success. You are greatly appreciated!
