ACEE Partners Create a Memorable Celebration for Allison and Sanchez Elementary School Literacy Champion Students

In 2006, ACEE was chosen from over 1,000 applicants as one of the recipients of a competitive and prestigious Giving Voice grant from the Starbucks Foundation. As part of this grant, ACEE has developed a partnership with local Starbucks stores that offer support to ACEE in the form of volunteers for ACEE events, in-store celebrations of our students' successes, and donations of coffee for ACEE parent workshops. On December 15, 2006, the Starbucks on 15th and San Antonio put on a two-hour holiday celebration for the participants in the ACEE Literacy Champions after-school tutoring program. That afternoon, ACEE members, community volunteer tutors, and tutees gathered at the Starbucks on 15th and San Antonio for ornament decorating, holiday drinks, and literacy games. Santa was present to spread holiday cheer and help the children with their literacy activities.

As the festivities came to a close, each child unwrapped a special gift—a new book to read over the holidays! This was made possible by a collaboration of Borders Books and First Book, a national non-profit that helps low-income children build a home library.

This event was a perfect way to unite our partnerships with Starbucks Foundation, First Book, and Borders Books that celebrated the hard work of our AmeriCorps members, our community volunteer tutors, and the students involved in our after-school program. Many thanks to all who participated.
