Over 450 children, parents and family members attended the Winn Elementary School Family Fun Night co-sponsored by ACEE and Reading is Fundamental of Austin on Thursday, March 23, 2006. Twenty ACEE members and 25 parent and teacher volunteers helped to put on the event, which includes 12 learning "stations" that demonstrate curriculum-based activities and games that parents and children can do together at home to support reading and writing. The games are designed to be inexpensive and easy to do, such as playing Go Fish or Concentration/Memory to learn high frequency words, or making books together with pictures from magazines.
This event was extra special as three ACEE alumni (Jesse Mimms, Cheryl Budisch and Katy Holody) returned to Winn, where they did their year of service in 2004-05, to volunteer for the event. And Katy took it one step further. She brought along her parents, visiting from Indiana, and her sister, who is an AmeriCorps VISTA this year at St. Edwards' University. It seems that service runs deep in the Holody family. The whole family just jumped into helping with the activities. Mr. Holody's jovial manner engaged large groups of children and parents all evening in a vocabulary game based on the popular Pictionary. Much laughter was heard from that station all night! This Winn Family Fun Night was a true family affair! Kudos to the current ACEE members, parent volunteers, teachers, alumni, guests and RIF for a memorable event.
