2005–2006 ACEE members.
Since 1994, ACEE members have provided effective research-based early literacy intervention and family education opportunities in high-poverty elementary schools in Austin, TX. This year, 25 full-time ACEE members, from Texas and 15 other states, will provide one to one and small group tutoring, after school mentoring and teaching and classroom instructional support to approximately 1500 children. These members will also impact over 5000 children and their families by conducting monthly Family Fun Nights, co-chairing the annual Día de los Niños/Día de los libros bilingual family literacy fair in April 2006 and dedicating many hours of weekend and evening service to local non-profits.
ACEE members joined with new and returning members from three other Austin AmeriCorps programs in a Swearing In Ceremony on the steps of the Texas State Capitol on Friday, September 16th. They heard from OneStar National Service Commission staff, state representative Elliott Naishtat, John Moore (Executive Director of Educational Support Services in AISD) and returning members from each program. The four programs represented were ACEE, Communities in Schools-Central TX AmeriCorps, Capital 4-H AmeriCorps and Mentoring for Homeless Self Sufficiency. These four programs will impact thousands of students and families in the Austin community through tutoring, mentoring, after school enrichment and outreach to families and individuals in homeless situations.
