New Member Recruitment Is Underway!

The ACEE program is currently accepting applications for the 2004-2005 program year. While there are no specific skills required for the ACEE program, as we train members on the skills they need, we are looking for individuals who have community service experience, enjoy working with young children, and have a strong desire to give back to the community. While a college education is not required, some college is a plus. We are particularly interested in recruiting people who are bilingual in Spanish, although speaking Spanish is not a requirement of the program.

ACEE is a program that supports young children's literacy learning in urban schools and their surrounding neighborhoods. There are 25 full-time AmeriCorps member positions available for the 2004-2005 program year. Full-time members serve approximately 45 hours per week. Members provide individualized tutoring to children in their classrooms and also implement educational enrichment activities in the schools and community for young children and their families. In addition to the preservice training, members also attend weekly training sessions, receive weekly on-site support at the schools, and attend two weekend training retreats in the fall and spring.

If you are interested in talking with any of our current members about their experience you can go to the contact page for their email addresses. We strongly encourage you to write and ask them any questions about the ACEE program. You can also read personal testimonials describing current members experience in the ACEE program by visiting A Day in the Life.

The ACEE program year runs from September 1 through the end of June, and we conduct interviews April through the end of August. You can fill out and submit an online application by visiting the How to Become a Member link.

This year, ACEE members receive an annual living stipend of $10,000 for full-time members. After completion of a year of service (at least 1,700 hours for full-time), members receive a tuition award in the amount of $4,725 that can be used for future college expenses or to pay back student loans. Health care benefits are provided to full-time members who are not currently covered by another policy. Unfortunately, we do not provide housing, but will assist you in locating housing and a roommate if you need help. All AmeriCorps members are eligible to apply for forbearance on their student loans as long as they are enrolled in an AmeriCorps program. Additionally, AmeriCorps will pay for the interest that accrues during your year of service.
