The Literacy Champions program is having a very successful year! Literacy Champions is an after-school tutoring program that meets weekly at Allison Elementary School. Ten "Big Champs" work with 10 second-grade "Little Champs" to build self-esteem, strengthen literacy skills, and develop important relationships. The "Big Champs" are comprised of community members, including attorneys at Baker Botts Law Firm.
Literacy Champions includes reading Time for Kids, a magazine that discusses current events from around the world in kid-friendly language. The champs have also worked hard on activities such as building model bridges, making butter, and writing and reading poetry!
Recently, Literacy Champions celebrated Dr. Seuss' birthday with an afternoon that included writing original Dr. Seuss-themed poetry!
Literacy Champions was developed by ACE Senior Program Coordinator Susan Buchanan and is run with the help of Allison ACE members Kati Hinkson, Meghan Robinson, and Trey Bussey. Little Champs and Big Champs are looking forward to new and exciting activities, such as a field trip that will include a visit to the Capitol, dinner at Baker Botts, and bat-watching.
