On Saturday, October 8, ACE partner school Allison Elementary hosted "Boo Away the Flu." The event serves as a great kick-off to fall, with students and families participating in an effort to promote healthy living habits and cold and flu prevention. As part of the Allison Elementary team, ACE tutors collaborated with Dell Children's Medical Center of Central Texas, Dental Smiles, SafePlace, and the American Red Cross of Central Texas to educate students and families in the community.

As part of the AmeriCorps experience, ACE tutors are required to contribute—in addition to their daily tutoring services—additional time volunteering. Therefore, ACE tutors played key roles throughout this event.

One of the more popular booths with Allison Elementary parents offered free flu shots for families. Tutor Kelly MacDevitt helped translate paperwork and procedures for Spanish-speaking families.

But the children got far more enjoyment from the group exercise and dance activities. Demonstrated by Allison Elementary staff and ACE tutors April Hite and Megan Robinson, these activities aimed at promoting student and family involvement in keeping active and healthy.

Participation in events such as Boo Away the Flu provides ACE a valuable opportunity to become a more active partner in project schools and the surrounding community.
