ACE gears up for new school year

August 2010

We are delighted to announce that ACE will be expanding the number of children and project schools we serve in 2010-11. As the new school year begins this week, ACE is preparing to enroll 112 AmeriCorps tutors who will work intensively with over 1400 pre-K through second grade students in 14 sites.

We will provide intensive daily tutoring to approximately 600 K-2 students at Allison, Andrews, Dawson, Linder, Oak Springs, Perez, and T. A. Brown elementary schools. We will work intensively daily with nearly 800 pre-K students at the Lucy Read Pre-K Demonstration School and Linder.

In addition, we are very excited to announce a new project with United Way Success by 6 to provide tutors and enhanced teacher training opportunities to six childcare centers that serve predominately low-income students in east Austin—Mainspring School, Trinity and Faith Child Development Centers, SafePlace, Little Folks, and Mt. Sinai Preschool. We hope that this pilot project will demonstrate how ACE can leverage our model in new settings to improve school readiness outcomes for three- and four-year-old students at these centers. Teachers at the center will also earn the AmeriCorps education award to be used to further their own education.

ACE is entering our sixteenth year of helping struggling readers, and we are stronger than ever. ACE is truly A Community for Education—engaging recent college graduates, current college students, and parents from our school communities—to work together to ensure that all children build a strong foundation in reading during their first years in school. Each year is a transformative experience for all involved, and we can't wait to get started with our new cohort.

We look forward to a great year ahead, and we thank our supporters and stakeholders for the support that makes our work possible!
