Austin AmeriCorps Programs Participate in Martin Luther King Peace Bench Project

May 2008

On Saturday, May 3, 50 members from a diverse range of Austin AmeriCorps programs, including ACEE, participated in the Martin Luther King Peace Bench project, creating 10 benches to be distributed to community centers, libraries, schools, and other public spaces in the city. The members gathered at the pavilion at the Alamo Recreation Center to assemble, sand, stain, and creatively decorate the benches with messages, quotes, and artwork related to peace, love, and nonviolence. The benches, part of a project launched by Hands On Central Texas, will serve as spaces for dialogue, learning, and discussion about the creation of peace and justice in Austin and the world. Austin's AmeriCorps programs were proud to participate in this inspirational project in honor of the second annual national AmeriCorps Week.
