ACEE Mid-Year Celebration and Rededication

February 2008

On Friday, January 18, 2008, ACEE members gathered at the halfway mark of our school year to celebrate our successes and to rededicate ourselves to a strong second half of the year. Dr. Uri Treisman, Executive Director of the Charles A. Dana Center and a nationally renowned expert in mathematics and science education and school reform, gave an inspiring talk about service as justice, and about the opportunities, privileges, and obligations of working to ensure that children's futures are not dependent on the accident of where they are born or what school they attend.

Each ACEE campus shared their successes and reflections on the year in unique ways—through read-alouds, videos, photo collages, and a "story-house." It was a moving tribute to the dedication of ACEE tutors and staff. We were fortunate that several Friends of ACEE could participate as well—sponsors, community partners, an ACEE Advisory Council member, and our wonderful community volunteer from Hoopoe/Share Literacy, Bob Rogers.

This year alone, ACEE tutors are working intensively with over 1,000 children, providing classroom instructional support to an additional 1,000 children in 85 classrooms, teaching ESL classes to over 40 parents, providing bi-monthly parent literacy workshops to over 100 parents, running two after-school community volunteer reading programs for 25 children, and helping Reading Is Fundamental of Austin put on weeky Family Literacy Nights at Head Start Centers, preschools, and elementary schools.

Here's to having a second half of the year as strong as the first!
