Alexandra Rodriguez, Program Assistant, Literacy First
Dana Center Role
Alex provides support and assistance to the K–2 team and AmeriCorps members for Literacy First, a program dedicated to providing low-income schools with highly trained tutors to ensure that children advance in reading before the third grade. Alex’s work also takes her out in the field, visiting our 32 schools around Austin.
Before Joining the Dana Center
Alex worked in the education landscape in various capacities. She first worked as a teacher’s assistant at a PK–8 school in Miami, FL, which sparked her love for working with young students. Inspired by that work, she then joined an AmeriCorps program (City Year) to gain more experience in the classroom. During her first year with City Year, Alex served as a tutor and mentor to 8th grade students in Dorchester, MA. She returned for a second year with City Year, transferring to their San Antonio site, to lead and manage a team of seven AmeriCorps Members at a middle school in the North East ISD. After the end of that academic year, Alex moved to Austin and joined Literacy First to continue her efforts to provide support services for students.
